After years of thinking about it, I finally decided to treat myself by adding an extension and doing a dream refurb on my own 1980s Swedish-built bungalow. It included an open plan living kitchen, drinks pantry, utility room, hallway and downstairs shower room. Above our garage we added a large bedroom, dressing room, and en suite.
I didn’t forget about the outside space either, as my husband and I love holding BBQs and entertaining. Outdoors we created an undercover patio with beautiful Italian porcelain tiles, and then landscaped the surrounding garden.
With such a big job, there was a lot of careful planning. I wanted to make sure the design was future proof and suitable for all weather, so we added timber frames and lots of insulation. As an extra consideration, my husband, who is 6’7”, needed to be able to move around comfortably, so this influenced decisions on things like door height.
This whole project resulted in a gorgeous social space that we now enjoy throughout the year.
