Tip 1 – Don’t overdo it- “Less is often More!”
There’s always the temptation but go wild at Christmas, but sometimes less can be more, some twinkly lights here and a few garlands there can go a long way. I always put away some of the items that have been out on display all year round. I put them into the box the Christmas decoration came out of, this way my house doesn’t feel cluttered. My decorations are then waiting to be swapped when the decorations come down. It also gives me an ideal opportunity to refresh and arrange them in the New Year.
Tip 2 - Ribbons and bows
Ribbons can add a new lease of lease of life to your regular Christmas decorations, baubles or ornaments. Tie bows or new loops using lovely festive colours such as gold or red. Tie a ribbon around a cushion to make a real Christmas statement, this looks great at very little cost. For more details, watch my YouTube video on ‘How to make Christmas Cushions’ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fFLjyXQCaFA&list=PLlNUNZEAjzCojBbuZvp_diOlHV29OE_Gs&index=3
Tip 3 - Vases and bowls
Have a good rummage through your cupboards and shelves at home, see if you have any nice vases or big glass bowls. All of which can be filled with variety of baubles you might not have on the tree, fir cones and glass beads or for parties, you could put out dishes with nice chocolates in.
Tip 4 - Flowers and greenery
To add ‘wow’ , you could have a vase or two with fresh festive looking flowers, or for a more repeatable look at Christmas, try silk flowers (you might even have one from last year). Amaryllis or Poinsettia once brought can be reused year after year in lots of different ways, tie with ribbon or add fir cones or glass beads. Group a few together on shelves or the window sill to add a more dramatic effect. A cheaper option would be to go out and see if you can pick up any Holly or ivy florets, spray with gold or silver for extra impact. You can also spray hydrangea and poppy heads to create a lovely effect.
Tip 5 - Colour co-ordinate
By planning your rooms by colour this helps create different themes throughout your house. For example, you could vary colour schemes based on the layout and what already exists in each room. Silvers and greys create a beautifully modern and crisp look.
Tips 6 – Find the perfect decorations
There is always a wonderful array of beautiful Christmas decorations and items on sale in small shops in market towns. Prices can vary from a few pounds up to a few hundred pounds. Whether you go for large reindeers or big glass baubles, the list is endless, just remember to stick to your chosen theme and colour. I love hunting in car boot sales, Christmas shabby chic stalls and charity shops, as you can always find a perfect little treat to decorate your home.
Tip 7 – Taking it all down
As you put your Christmas decorations away, always keep everything organised so that redecorating is not a daunting task next year.
